Five players from Ittihad de Tanger football club (IRT) have gone missing at sea on Saturday, July 6, following a yacht trip off the coast of M’diq in the northern Morocco. According to some sources, the players jumped into the water to swim, leaving the yacht unattended. Strong winds subsequently caused the yacht to drift away from their location.
According to the same sources, the Royal Navy and Royal Gendarmerie successfully rescued three players from certain death, over 800 meters off the M’diq coast, after an hour and a half of attempts to reach the yacht’s location, following an emergency alert. Elements from the Royal Navy and Royal Gendarmerie continue extensive search operations to locate the two missing players, Abdellatif Akhrif and Salmane El Harrak.
IRT president Mohammed Cherkaoui stated to the media last night that rescue attempts are ongoing, and all information regarding the death of player Abdellatif Akhrif is merely rumors.
As rescue efforts continue, the Royal Gendarmerie has initiated an urgent investigation under the supervision of the Tétouan prosecutor to determine the circumstances and details of this tragic incident.
