Salah’s Last-Minute Penalty Rescues Egypt from Mozambique Upset

In a thrilling opener of Group B at the Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023, Egypt faced an unexpected challenge from Mozambique, and it was captain Mohammed Salah who rose to the occasion with a late goal to secure a 2-2 draw.

The seven-time champions quickly took the lead within two minutes, courtesy of Mohamed Mostafa’s clinical finish. Although Salah missed a connection with Mohammed Hamdi’s cross, Mostafa capitalized on the opportunity with a precise shot into the bottom corner.

Despite several chances for Egypt to extend their lead, Mozambique demonstrated resilience. The Mambas found the equalizer in the second half when Witness Quembo headed home a well-delivered cross from Domingos in the 55th minute – marking Mozambique’s first goal in 14 years.

Three minutes later, Clesio Bauque capitalized on a defensive lapse, breaking through to score Mozambique’s second with a one-on-one against Mohamed El Shenawy.

In the closing stages, a foul on Mostafa Mohammed led to Egypt being awarded a penalty after a VAR review. Captain Salah stepped up, converting the penalty to level the score at 2-2.

The result sets the stage for an exciting tournament, with Egypt set to face Ghana on Thursday, January 18, at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium.
