As anticipated, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will not take place in January next year in Morocco. Scheduling adjustments, necessitated by the Club World Cup, have led to the rescheduling of the African competition. FIFA’s influence has pushed the CAF to move the tournament to December, as announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee today.
The Executive Committee announced that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 will now be held between December 21, 2025, and January 18, 2026, likewise the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), also to be hosted in Morocco. will be held between July 5, 2025, and July 26, 2025.
in a press release, CAF President Patrice Motsepe acknowledged the complexities and challenges in finalizing the dates due to the extensive international and domestic match calendars. He emphasized CAF’s commitment to protecting and advancing the interests of African players worldwide and to building mutually beneficial relationships with the ECA, UEFA, other football confederations, and FIFA.
Motsepe also expressed his confidence in the success of both tournaments. “I am confident that the CAF TotalEnergies AFCON Morocco 2025 will be extremely successful and will be the best AFCON in the history of this competition. I am also impressed by the enormous growth of Women’s Football in Africa and I am expecting the CAF TotalEnergies WAFCON Morocco 2024 to be immensely successful.”
CAF president, expressed gratitude to King Mohamed VI of Morocco, the Moroccan Royale Federation of Football (FRMF), its President Fouzi Lekjaa, the Moroccan government, and the people of Morocco for hosting both the AFCON and WAFCON tournaments.
Moroccan Royale Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa shared his optimism, stating, “We hope that the CAF TotalEnergies AFCON Morocco 2025 will be the best event to honor Africa, and Morocco will make available the best conditions to host the rest of Africa and the World.”
In other decisions, the CAF Executive Committee resolved to host the 46th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in Kinshasa, DRC, on Thursday, October 10, 2024 and opened the bids to host the CAF Women’s Champions League 2024, CAF TotalEnergies U17 AFCON, CAF TotalEnergies U20 AFCON, and the CAF Awards 2024.
Additionally, CAF has received attractive proposals from the Middle East for hosting the CAF TotalEnergies Super Cup 2024, featuring Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC and Zamalek SC, winners of the CAF TotalEnergies Champions League and CAF TotalEnergies Confederation Cup, respectively.
