Aziz Laarraf, Vice President of the Royal Moroccan Tennis Federation, was elected President of the North Africa Zone of the African Tennis Confederation (CAT) during the Electoral General Assembly held on Friday in Nairobi, Kenya.
Competing against the incumbent president, Nabil Cheriak from Algeria, Laarraf secured a significant victory with five out of six votes. A source at Sportribune noted, “This success reflects the trust and confidence placed in the Royal Moroccan Tennis Federation at both the regional and continental levels.”
Following his election, Aziz Laarraf expressed to the Maghreb Arabe Press Agency (MAP), “This election is a recognition of the progress witnessed in Moroccan tennis over the past decade, particularly in youth categories.” Laarraf highlighted Morocco’s efforts in tennis development, receiving commendation from all participants during the assembly’s proceedings.
The 50th annual assembly, attended by 37 African Federations, also saw the election of Jean Claude Talon from Benin as the President of the African Tennis Confederation for the 2023-2027 term. Succeeding Tunisian Tarak Cherif, Talon secured 25 votes, prevailing over his competitor Nelson Amanze from Botswana, who received 12 votes.
Several eminent personalities from the tennis world were present at the assembly, including David Haggerty, President of the International Tennis Federation.
