In a dynamic start to the Africa Cup of Nations, Côte d’Ivoire 2023, Mali asserted their tournament ambitions with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa in Tuesday’s Group E clash.
The match kicked off with both teams exchanging early blows, and Mali had an opportunity to take the lead within four minutes, but Ronwen Williams’ quick reflexes denied Lassine Sinayoko.
South Africa responded with Percy Tau creating a chance, forcing Djigui Diarra into a crucial save. However, Tau squandered a golden opportunity to give Bafana Bafana the lead by blasting a 19th-minute penalty over the bar after VAR awarded the spot-kick.
Mali intensified their offensive efforts in the second half, with Amadou Haidara hitting the crossbar before Hamari Traore netted the opening goal in the 60th minute. Five minutes later, Sinayoko extended Mali’s lead, drilling a low shot through Williams’ legs.
Despite a late rally from South Africa, including Themba Zwane’s free-kick hitting the woodwork, Mali secured a convincing victory.
