How Will CAF Deal with Algeria’s Political Immaturity?

Brahim Karim for Sportibune.com

The recent incident involving the Algerian authorities’ decision to prevent the RS Berkane team from entering Algerian territory due to the design of their jerseys has put the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in an embarrassing position. This display of political immaturity by the Algerian administration raises questions about how CAF will address such behavior and maintain the integrity of African football.

The actions of the Algerian authorities reflect a concerning trend of politicizing sports, particularly when it comes to issues related to neighboring countries like Morocco. By denying entry to a football team based on the design of their jerseys, Algeria has not only violated the principles of fair play but also undermined the spirit of sportsmanship and unity that football should promote.

CAF now faces the challenge of navigating this delicate situation while upholding the values of inclusivity and respect in football. The organization must send a clear message that political disputes have no place in sports and that such actions will not be tolerated within the football community.

Indeed, the recent incident involving the Moroccan football delegation’s jerseys being confiscated at the Algerian airport is not an isolated event. It’s reminiscent of a similar occurrence last year when Morocco withdrew from the African Nations Championship (CHAN) due to similar reasons. In that instance, Morocco had to withdraw from the tournament because Algeria refused to allow the Moroccan national football team to travel within Algerian territory using its national and official carrier, Royal Air Maroc. This pattern of obstructing Moroccan sports teams’ travel arrangements is concerning, highlighting a recurring issue that needs to be addressed.

These repetetive incidents, highlights the need for CAF to intervene to to assert its authority and take proactive steps to address political interference in football, especially, those carried out by Algeria without maturity, following military mentalities that expend millions of dollars on an issue in which they are not supposed to be part of, instead of investing these funds in developing their infrastructure and sports policies, as Morocco does. Morocco who hosts dozens of African countries to play their friendly and official matches on its soil, thereby providing major services to CAF.

CAF need to assert its authority and take proactive steps to address political interference in football. By teaching Algeria, the basics of the values of fair play and sportsmanship, with that CAF can help ensure that African football continues to thrive as a symbol of unity and solidarity across the continent.
