Berrettini Secures Hassan II Trophy Title After Two-Year Absence

Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini secured victory at the 38th edition of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech, held at the Royal Tennis Club from March 31 to April 7, 2024. Berrettini defeated Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena with a score of 7-5, 6-2, after initially trailing in the first set, clinching his first ATP trophy in two years since his triumph at the Queen’s Club in 2022.

Participating in only his second tour-level tournament of 2024, Berrettini showcased remarkable resilience throughout the Grand Prix Hassan II. Despite entering the tournament on a protected ranking, he displayed exceptional form, defeating three seeded players, including compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in the quarterfinals, to advance to the title match.

This win marks Berrettini’s eighth ATP singles title and is particularly significant considering his recent struggles with injuries. The former Top 10 player had been sidelined due to a foot injury, which forced him to withdraw from the Australian Open earlier in the year. Following a six-month hiatus after an ankle injury at the US Open, Berrettini made his comeback at the Phoenix Challenger in Arizona last month, followed by an appearance at the Miami Open where he faced Andy Murray in the first round.

Furthermore, Berrettini’s victory denied Carballes Baena a consecutive title in Marrakech. The unseeded Spanish player, who clinched the title last year, had also displayed impressive performances throughout the tournament, notably defeating No. 3 seed Dan Evans on his path to the final.
